How to make the most of the ECO badge for parking and driving in Marbella

Every car in this category carries the DGT's ECO badge, the environmental sticker for non-plug-in hybrids. It gives you access to low-emission zones and to parking spaces reserved for badge holders, both in Marbella and across the rest of Spain.

On days when other cities restrict traffic due to pollution, the ECO badge also exempts you from the restrictions that apply to petrol or diesel cars without a sticker.

The hybrid performs best on the kind of journey you'll do most often in Marbella: old town, Puerto Banús and San Pedro, with stop-start traffic and closely spaced traffic lights. The electric motor kicks in at low speed and recovers energy when braking, so the savings are more noticeable driving around town than on the road to Málaga.

Do I choose the exact hybrid model, or am I assigned one from the category?

You choose the exact model when you book, not just the category. You'll see the full list of available hybrids, with automatic or manual transmission like the Fiat 500 Hybrid, and reserve the one you want. That's the car you'll pick up.

Can I take the hybrid to Gibraltar or Portugal?

With premium cover, yes, the insurance includes Gibraltar and Portugal as well as Spain. With basic cover, the insurance only covers mainland Spain, so if you're crossing the border you'll need premium.

Do I need to plug it in to charge the battery?

No, these are non-plug-in hybrids. The electric motor charges itself through braking and the petrol engine alone, so no charging point is needed. Some rental companies in the area offer plug-in hybrids (PHEV) that need charging at a specific point before or during the trip, ours don't: you just get in, start up and go.

Can I add a second driver without paying extra?

With premium, yes, the additional driver is included free of charge. With basic, it's not included, so bear that in mind if two different people will be driving.

Is the basic plan's 150 km a day enough for a round trip to Málaga?

Yes. Marbella to Málaga and back is around 120 km, so the basic plan's 150 km a day covers that full trip with room to spare. If you're only travelling around the Costa del Sol, you won't need premium for the mileage.
